genderbitch: And for the record, I don't hate vegans. I dislike it when vegans fail to realize that their ability to eat a specialized diet is a product of privilege and instead of acknowledging that privilege, they turn around and chastise everyone for not having the same set of circumstances they do.
if you are a vegan and you are conscious of this, i have no problem with you as i would hope you have no problem with me.
and i still think vegan food is some of the most delicious on the planet. i seriously fucking miss those days.
Seconded
word
DEFINITELY NOT SECONDED. How ignorant of history was the person who wrote the original post? VERY.
I’m a live-and-let-live person, as all of my followers probably have realized by now, based on everything I post - but I also speak up about BS when I read it. I have nothing at all against omnivores and carnivores - do what works for you and your body. Do what makes you feel good.
I suggest the OP read some books on the history of food. Meat has more or less always been until very recently a luxurious food eaten only by the rich and the aristocracy. Peasants and the masses of most civilizations ate largely vegetarian diets. So no, being vegan is not a product of high society. I think all to often people forget that veganism is not about fake meats, soy milk, and egg replacers. It’s about fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, and whole grains - food that is affordable and accessible to the poor. Even today it’s the cheapest food around, and you can grow it yourself. Most people don’t have the resources to kill a cow and process it all by their damn self into a hamburger. Fruits/veg/grains is the food that much of the population of the world has thrived on for ages. I’m not really talking about many native hunting/gathering societies, but the so-called “civilized world” - medieval Europe, etc.
I’ll get off my soapbox. Recommended reading: Food Politics, Food Safety, The China Study, Food Inc.

Oh I was so ready for this. So ready for this. The whole entire time at work I was waiting for somebody to speak out of ignorance and well, here we have it.
First of all, I’m going to let the irony of the first paragraph sink in for all the people who follow me. And then I’m going to go easy on you, because I think you’ve missed the other post I wrote about this entitled ‘Dear vegans’ in which I talked about the fact that I was vegetarian for eight years and had to finally introduce tiny bits of meat into my diet again (a fact which I fucking hate, for the record) because of severe and unchecked anemia that iron supplements alone could not handle and that when I talk about privilege, I’m not talking about economic privilege alone (although in today’s modern world, with the food industry being what it is, where your precious veggies aren’t exactly cheap in some regards either), but your privilege as someone who can live by and follow the tenets of your dietary faith without getting severely ill and sick as I was.
Because while your ancestors were being super vegan warriors in the hills of wherever, mine were fornicating and marrying on both sides of the Mediterranean putting me at genetic risk for a disorder called thalassemia. With such a genetic predisposition to anemia and with the inefficiency of iron supplements (believe me, I tried), it was decided that either I could try eating meat again or pay for extensive iron therapy. And unless you’re going to pay for my iron treatments, you’d better hold the phone.
See, this is exactly indicative of the kind of condescension and bullshit I personally hate and since you’re gonna call me out on mine, I’m going to call you out on yours. Without knowing anything of me, without even understanding the context, you’re going to pass me off as ignorant and stupid and unread just because I don’t adhere to the vegan diet. And then you wonder why people may not be hailing you as the great savior of the world. You have no idea how agonizing the decision to go back to eating meat was and how much I hate it, but you’re going to pass judgment on me like there’s no tomorrow. In short, you’re going to embody all the fucking privilege I was talking about but in like a totally serious way. I’m not talking solely about economic privilege. I’m talking about health privilege too. About a whole bunch of things you didn’t even think of.
Save your recommendations and your blessings. I don’t need nor want them.
Vegan =/= only avoiding meat, littlecitywitch.
In order to cut out any and all animal products from foods you have to amp up the prices in your food budget. Because there are animal elements in all sorts of stuff, including grain base foods like pierogies (eggs), bread (milk, eggs), cheap crappy prepackaged food (usually stuff like gelatin and some dairy).
And certain fish, like say canned tuna, is loads and loads cheaper than any fucking veggies. 87 cents a can here and I can make a meal out of one can (not in sandwich form but eating it out of the can) Most vegetables roll in the dollar range around here and in terms of nutrients per volume, do not make up an entire fucking meal in comparison to tuna fish out of a can.
So no, veggies are not accessible and cheap everywhere and it is not easier or cheaper to be vegan just cuz meat isn’t that accessible (and guess who eats very little goddamn meat? This chick. This not vegan chick), so please kindly shut the fuck up, you privileged git.
Does the term “food desert” mean anything to this privileged douche? How about the ethnocide that was the USian melting pot which virtually eliminated the knowledge to create balanced meals from local ingredients? How about climate change disrupting local diets? How about the WTO disallowing country of origin labeling in a “free” market putting pressure on local farmers? Privilege is systemic and institutional, douchebag.
Pointing out now, since I neglected to do beforehand, that all of the discussion up here is likely only relevant in certain parts of the western world, USA, CA and UK among some other European areas. Your mileage will vary depending on where you live and what culture you’re in and veganism isn’t inherently privileged worldwide. Just in much of the USA, Canada, UK and parts of Europe.
