I hate PETA SO much. 

PETA is shite. But hey, how surprised are we to see sexism (among racism, western culturocentricism, classism, ableism and appropriation) from the animal rights movement?

I’m not surprised. Is anyone surprised?

if you only define “animal rights movement” as a phenomenon occurring among middle and upper class westerners, then no, this isn’t surprising.  these are all issues that that demographic set has, their intersection with the animal rights movement is a logical accident, not an intrinsic characteristic of the movement.  Lingayats and Jains are probably more characteristic of the movement in general.  Lingayats have been systematically fighting racism, classism, sexism, and religious bigotry since the high middle ages.  the only reason their scriptures don’t also mention homophobia and transphobia is because it was founded before the western conception of gender binary was imported into India, though the ones I’ve talked with weren’t at all bigoted.  they’re also universally vegetarian, invented social work, and continue to constitute the majority of its practitioners in India today.

by claiming people like PETA and other priveleged westerners with priveleged western insensitivies are somehow more characteristic of animal rights than the historical and modern majority of dharmic vegetarians, you’re actually white-washing the movement and marginalizing them.

can I just say that it’s awesome we’ve both pointed stuff like that out and nobody’s gotten defensive and upset?  I think you may be the first person I’ve had a discussion on this sort of stuff with online that hasn’t ended up hating me. I’ve seen so many shouting matches I kinda want to give you a hug for calling me on shit and not minding if I return the favour.

As much as I love hugs, I really shouldn’t be getting any special cookies for not being a colossal racist and culturocentric apologist jackass and taking a call out gracefully.
